“The Coca-Cola Company (TCCC), headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, is the world’s largest soft-drink company. The company owns four of the top five soft-drink brands (Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Fanta, and Sprite). Other brands include Minute Maid, Powerade, and Dasani water. In North America it sells Groupe Danone’s Evian. Outside of Australia, Europe and North America, the company sells brands from the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group (Crush, Dr. Pepper and Schweppes). Coca Cola makes or licenses over 3,000 drinks in some 200 countries. It owns 32% of Mexico’s bottler Coca-Cola FEMSA and 23% of European bottler Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling. In late 2010, TCCC bought out its leading bottler, Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE), and renamed it Coca-Cola Refreshments USA. In the fiscal year ending in December of 2010, the company reported sales of approximately $35.2 billion dollars and had 92,800 employees. Coca-Cola Co.’s CEO, Muhtar Kent, earned over $24 million in 2010… Coca-Cola is a member of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). Gene Rackley, the Director of Public Affairs and Communications at Coca-Cola Refreshments, is on the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) corporate (‘Private Enterprise’) board. ALEC is not a lobby; it is not a front group. It is much more powerful than that. Through ALEC, behind closed doors, corporations hand state legislators the changes to the law they desire that directly benefit their bottom line.”

http://sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Coca-Cola_Company

Like many multinational corporations, Coca-Cola has really ramped up its lobbying and contributions to Washington DC politicians in recent years, their agenda generally to keep corporate taxes and fees low, regulations light, and to oppose any legislation that would make their products safer to consume, or their impact on the environment less damaging. From 1989 to 2010 their contributed $8.7 million to politicians – 54% to Republicans and 46% to Democrats with Barack Obama and George W. Bush being 2 of the top 3 individual recipients. Their reported lobbying investment since 1997 totals almost $30 million, and the list of pockets that money ended up in we’d wager is long and distinguished:

“Consider the debate in Congress about whether to impose tariffs on Chinese imports if China continues to depress the value of its currency. Roughly 150 House members, including 45 Republicans, have authored a bill to do just that, and the Ways and Means Committee will take up the bill on Friday. Unions and some domestic manufacturers support the bill. But a large number of American businesses, in a campaign coordinated by the U.S.-China Business Council, oppose it. Now, there’s nothing un-American in opposing the legislation as such – far from it. Support for and opposition to tariffs are both as American as apple pie. The question here is whether the 220 corporations that belong to the council – household names such as Coca-Cola, Bank of America, Ford, GM, Wal-Mart, Intel, Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, J.P. Morgan Chase, Chevron, Exxon Mobil and Boeing – are already so deeply invested in China as manufacturers, marketers or retailers that buy goods there to sell them here that their interests are more closely aligned with China’s than with America’s. Revaluing China’s currency would be helpful to domestic U.S. manufacturers, their employees and the communities where those employees live and work, but America’s largest companies have long since ceased to be domestic.”

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/09/22/AR2010092205315.html

“Guess Where Coca-Cola Is Investing $4 Billion… Who says American companies aren’t investing? They are. Billions, in fact. Only, they are just not investing here in the U.S. Atlanta based Coca-Cola (KO) plans to invest $4 billion in [‘Communist’] China, the company’s CEO Muhtar Kent told reporters in Shanghai this week. It’s the company’s biggest planned investment in China since the 2009 investment of $2 billion. The investments will start next year and is [sic] part of the company’s China capex until 2014.”

“Coca-Cola is one of the most iconic brands of both the 20th and 21st centuries, promoting itself as the drink of freedom, choice and US patriotism. But behind this carefully crafted image exists a company accused of environmental damage, human rights violations and questionable business practices. Political activist and journalist Mark Thomas travels to South America, India and the US to investigate the way in which Coca-Cola and its suppliers operate and the extent to which they upholds moral and ethical obligations.”

THE IMPOTENCE OF ELECTIONS

It is no coincidence that of the last 14 U.S. presidents, 7 have been Democrats and 7 have been Republicans:

Our Kleptocracy-controlled media focuses on America’s two-year election cycles as if who wins or loses in the swinging of the pendulum was a matter of life or death, when in fact even at the Presidential level it makes no more difference than the outcomes of Monday Night Football, American Idol, Dancing With The Stars, Hillbilly Handfishing or the trial of Michael Jackson’s doctor. U.S. elections are staged primarily to give Sheeple the illusion of control so they will (a) vent their frustrations and expend their energy, emotions and resources supporting or attacking the Puppet on the Left hand or the Puppet on the Right, and consequently (b) never recognize and challenge the common omnipotent Puppetmaster.

There was no real change in 2008. There was no real change in 2010. There WILL be real change in 2012, but it won’t be coming from tele-brainwashed couch potatoes, manipulated voter lists, rigged voting machines or predetermined ballot counts. It will be coming from us…

ConocoPhillips: Millions in Washington Lobbying Preserves Billions in Big Oil Subsidies (g1a2d0039c1)

CONOCO PHILLIPS: MILLIONS IN WASHINGTON LOBBYING PRESERVES BILLIONS IN BIG OIL SUBSIDIES
Global Revolution 1: American Revolution 2: Day 39: Communication 1
IronBoltBruce’s Kleptocracy Chronicles for 25 Oct 2011 (g1a2d0039c1)
How many examples of greed and corruption must you see before you act?

ConocoPhillips Company is an American multinational energy corporation headquartered in Houston, Texas. With 2010 revenues of over $196 billion and earnings of over $19 billion, they rank #3 on the Fortune 500 list. ConocoPhillips is the fifth largest private sector energy corporation in the world, and is one of the six “supermajor” vertically integrated oil companies. It sells fuel under the Conoco, Phillips 66 and Union 76 brands in North America, and Jet in Europe.

ConocoPhillips was a business partner of the late Libyan strongman Muammar Qaddafi, who once “…summoned ConocoPhillips Chairman and Chief Executive Officer James J. Mulva to Sirte, Qaddafi’s hometown in northern Libya [for] ‘a half-hour browbeating,’ according to a March 12, 2008, cable written by Chris Stevens, U.S. charge d’affaires for Libya.”

http://tinyurl.com/6xhw2y4

ConocoPhillips is currently a business partner of Communist China, who has also been taking the company to task over a recent oil spill that has “…polluted 5,500 sq km [2,124 square miles] of Bohai Bay, the most serious marine ecological incident in China.”

http://tinyurl.com/3mh55k7

ConocoPhillips gets much better treatment in Washington DC, where since 2001 they have pumped over $68 million into lobbying and made millions more in direct campaign contributions to preserve their petro-privileged status, e.g.:

“[High] prices at the pump are only part of Americans’ Big Oil bill. They also pay more than $4 billion in unnecessary tax subsidies for domestic oil drilling and production every year. These subsidies are wasteful and expensive. Oil companies produce oil regardless of whether they receive these tax breaks, and they would still realize enormous profits without federal handouts… Yet Big Oil’s representatives in Congress stubbornly defend Big Oil giveaways even if it means cutting deep into popular, important programs to make up for the cost. The House-passed fiscal year 2012 budget would cut Medicare spending by $30 billion over a decade, for example, while maintaining $40 billion in tax breaks to Big Oil over the same period… Of course, it’s no coincidence that so many members of Congress consistently defend tax loopholes for Big Oil. Oil companies spend millions of dollars pressuring Congress to keep their taxpayer-funded subsidies intact. They’ve already spent $40 million on lobbying so far this year, and of all the oil and gas lobbying spenders in 2011, four of the Big Five oil companies – ConocoPhillips, Shell, ExxonMobil, and Chevron – claimed the top four spots.”

http://tinyurl.com/3sv82qd

“ConocoPhillips announced their 2011 second-quarter earnings, reporting profits of $3.4 billion, bringing their total profits in the first six months of 2011 to $6.4 billion. Below is a quick look at ConocoPhillips, by the numbers:

* ConocoPhillips has spent over $6 million lobbying Congress in 2011, ranking in as the fourth largest spender this year.

* ConocoPhillips has contributed $53,600 to federal campaigns in 2011…

* ConocoPhillips devoted $1.6 billion of its $3 billion 2011 first-quarter earnings to stock buybacks – more than 50 percent of its profit.

* ConocoPhillips’ Chairman and CEO James Mulva received a 25-percent hike in compensation last year, earning him a total compensation of $17.9 million.

It’s kind of an amplifying carbon-cycle feedback. Rake in billions from consumers, use the money to buy influence to maintain tax breaks. And as a bonus, any deficit cuts have to come at the expense of … consumers. Talk about win-win for Big Oil!”

http://tinyurl.com/3lkwc67

“The Political Economy Research Institute ranks ConocoPhillips number 11 on their list of the 100 worst U.S. polluters, higher than any other energy company.”

http://www.polluterwatch.com/conocophillips

ConocoPhillips is scheduled to break up into two companies – one for production and one for refining – in 2012:

Wal-Mart: Greed and the High Cost of Low Price (g1a2d0038c1)

WAL-MART (a.k.a. WALMART): GREED AND THE HIGH COST OF LOW PRICE
Global Revolution 1: American Revolution 2: Day 38: Communication 1
IronBoltBruce’s Kleptocracy Chronicles for 24 Oct 2011 (g1a2d0038c1)
How many examples of greed and corruption must you see before you act?

With $421.8 billion in revenues and $16.4 billion in earnings last year, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (branded Walmart in 2008) tops the 2011 Fortune 500 list. Doing business under 55 different names with 8,500 locations in 15 countries, it is considered to be the world’s largest private (i.e. publicly traded) corporation. And with much of its growth based on the selling (and buying) of cheap imported goods at low prices, some estimate the success of Wal-Mart (and the “savings” of its customers) has been at the expense of thousands of small business closures and millions of American jobs exported.

“[The] contributions of the Wal-Mart Stores political action committee to federal candidates and other political committees has grown rapidly during the past decade as new stores continue to be built across the country. In recent years Wal-Mart Stores was most active [in the opposition of] clean energy, taxes and consumer safety initiatives, as well as the Employee Free Choice Act legislation of 2009.”

http://www.opensecrets.org/orgs/summary.php?cycle=A&type=P&id=D000000367

“In 2010, Wal-Mart and its affiliated companies spent more than $6 million lobbying Congress and federal agencies… The company also exercises considerable pull through large campaign contributions. During the 2010 election cycle alone, Wal-Mart, through its employees and political action committees, donated more than $1.6 million to federal candidates, with Republican and Democratic candidates receiving approximately equal shares of this money.”

http://www.opensecrets.org/news/2011/04/the-credit-card-lobby-wal-marts-pol.html

The impact of this greed global giant on America’s politics and people has become so pervasive that the company has not only its own Wikipedia criticism page…

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Walmart

…but also its own watchdog website, WalmartWatch.org, whose summary assessments are as follows:

“Community Impact: Walmart passes on significant costs to many of the states and communities where it operates because so many of the company’s Associates and their families participate in publicly-funded health care and other public assistance programs because of lack of affordable health care from Walmart. At the same time, Walmart sends much of its revenue out of local communities, while local businesses keep more consumer dollars in the local economy. Walmart has created a new kind of blight by leaving vacant, abandoned stores throughout the country.”

http://walmartwatch.org/blog/archives/category/walmarts-impact/community-impact/

“Corporate Responsibility: Because Walmart is the world’s largest retailer, it sets industry standards for wages, benefits and corporate responsibilities that impact millions of retail workers, their families and communities. As Walmart’s influence continues to grow at home and abroad, policymakers, media and others are asking questions about the impact of Walmart in our community. Unfortunately this impact all too often includes lowering of standards that hurt communities and families.”

http://walmartwatch.org/blog/archives/category/walmarts-impact/corporate-responsibility/

“Environmental Record: In recent years, Walmart has begun efforts to become a more environmentally responsible company. The company marks this initiative as one of their flagship efforts. But these efforts do little to counteract Walmart’s basic formula of large format stores combined with imports from overseas.”

http://walmartwatch.org/blog/archives/category/walmarts-impact/environmental-record/

“Impact On Other Businesses: From small businesses to major chains, all grocery and retail establishments that compete with Walmart are impacted by the company. Competitors are often forced to lower wages and standards. By using a model based on low-wages, high-efficiency transportation, and imported goods, Walmart has a history of destroying once thriving downtowns across rural America. Because Walmart has saturated rural and suburban America, the company’s new growth area in the U.S. is urban communities. Additionally, Walmart’s scale gives it unprecedented control over how suppliers do business. Therefore, the company’s policies have repercussion across the entire supply system.”

http://walmartwatch.org/blog/archives/category/walmarts-impact/impact-on-other-businesses/

“Political Power: Walmart has a sophisticated and massive lobbying effort to influence policy makers at every level Walmart and organizations directly affiliated with Walmart have sought to advance goals such as school vouchers, entering urban communities, restricting tariff protections, limiting port security, eliminating the estate tax, oppose strong worker protections, and obtaining lucrative subsidies.”

http://walmartwatch.org/blog/archives/category/walmarts-impact/political-power/

SourceWatch.org also discloses that Wal-Mart is a board member of the American Legislative Exchange Council:

‘Wal-Mart is on the corporate (“Private Enterprise”) board of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). Maggie Sans, Vice President of Public Affairs at Wal-Mart, represents Wal-Mart on the corporate board as of 2011. It was a “Chairman” level sponsor of 2011 American Legislative Exchange Council Annual Conference, which in 2010, equated to $50,000… ALEC is not a lobby; it is not a front group. It is much more powerful than that. Through ALEC, behind closed doors, corporations hand state legislators the changes to the law they desire that directly benefit their bottom line. Along with legislators, corporations have membership in ALEC. Corporations sit on all nine ALEC task forces and vote with legislators to approve “model” bills. They have their own corporate governing board which meets jointly with the legislative board. (ALEC says that corporations do not vote on the board.) They fund almost all of ALEC’s operations. Participating legislators … then bring those proposals home and introduce them in statehouses across the land as their own brilliant ideas and important public policy innovations – without disclosing that corporations crafted and voted on the bills. ALEC boasts that it has over 1,000 of these bills introduced by legislative members every year, with one in every five of them enacted into law. ALEC describes itself as a “unique,” “unparalleled” and “unmatched” organization. It might be right. It is as if a state legislature had been reconstituted, yet corporations had pushed the people out the door. Learn more at:’
